New Developments and Novel Therapeutic Perspectives for Vitamin C ,

Abstract: Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis and biosynthesis of certain hormones and recommended dietary intake levels are largely based these requirements. However, to function effectively as an antioxidant (or a pro-oxidant), relatively high levels of this vitamin must be maintained in the body. The instability of vitamin C combined with its relatively poor intestinal absorption and ready excretion from the body reduce physiological availability of this vitamin. This inability to maintain high serum levels … Show more

“…Vitamin C loss is known to increase with exposure to heat (as in pasteurization), light and oxygen. Vitamin C is involved in protein metabolism, collagen synthesis and an important physiological antioxidant (Li and Schellhorn, 2007). It also plays an important role in immune function, improves absorption of non-heme iron and participates in biosynthesis of glucocorticoids (Gershoff, 1993).…”

“…Vitamin C is effective against superoxide, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, peroxyl radical and singlet oxygen [118]. Cooperative interactions exist among vitamin C and vitamin E. They interact synergistically at the membrane-cytosol interface to regenerate membrane-bound oxidized vitamin E [119] (Fig. 2).…”

“…Acción de antioxidantes Vitamina C y E. La vitamina C mejora la disfunción endotelial (108), estabilizando la tetrahidrobiopterina, cofactor de la eNOS, aumentando la biodisponibilidad de NO (109,110). Además, junto a la vitamina E protege al NO bloqueando a las ROS, actuando sobre los receptores de angiotensina II e indirectamente estimulando la síntesis de prostaglandina I2 (PGI2) (111)(112)(113).…”
