New diffusion phantoms dedicated to the study and validation of high‐angular‐resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) models

Abstract: We present new diffusion phantoms dedicated to the study and validation of high-angular-resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) models. The phantom design permits the application of imaging parameters that are typically employed in studies of the human brain. The phantoms were made of small-diameter acrylic fibers, chosen for their high hydrophobicity and flexibility that ensured good control of the phantom geometry. The polyurethane medium was filled under vacuum with an aqueous solution that was previously dega… Show more

“…Many types of phantoms have been described for DTI QA purposes, including isotropic solution bottle phantom using water (20) or other liquids with diffusivities similar to human brain tissues, (21) and anisotropic phantoms 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 . One primary task of DTI QA is to ensure the measured diffusivity and FA values are accurate.…”

“…Diffusion-weighted data were acquired from a physical phantom (Poupon et al, 2008) on a 3T MRI system with 3 Â 3 Â 3mm 3 voxel resolution, b value = 1500 s/mm 2 and 65 directions (1 unweighted and 64 diffusion directions). A single-shot diffusionweighted twice refocused spin echo EPI pulse sequence was used to perform the acquisitions, while compensating for eddy currents to the first order.…”
