New dimeric chromanone derivatives from the mutant strains of Penicillium oxalicum and their bioactivities

Abstract: Three new chromanone dimers, paecilins F–H (1–3) and ten known compounds (4–13), were obtained from the mutant strains of Penicillium oxalicum 114-2, and some of them showed significant antiviral activities.

“…Paecilin D was reported from Talaromyces sp., an endophyte of Duguetia stelechantha [40], and paecilin E was produced by the marine fungus Neosartorya fennelliae [31]. More recently, 14 additional paecilins have been reported from the endophytic fungus Xylaria curta E10 [42] and a mutant strain of Penicillium oxalicum 114-2 [43]. It is very important to note that, the chemical structures of paecilins F-H reported from the endophytic fungus Xylaria curta E10 [42] are different from those of paecilins F-H reported from the mutant strain of Penicillium oxalicum 114-2 [43].…”

The two papers [42,43] have been published in the same time frame, and the authors have unfortunately used the same name (paecilins F-H) for three new paecilin molecules produced by these fungi.…”

“…No significant activity was found for the new chromones. Gu et al isolated three new chromanone dimer derivatives, paecilins F–H ( 110 – 112 , Figure ) from the mutant strains of Penicillium oxalicum 114-2 . The structures were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic data, and these compounds were evaluated for antiviral, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities.…”

“…Specifically, the existence of multiple chiral centers and axial chiralities further enhances their structural complexity, posing challenges in unambiguously determining configurations and in the chemical synthesis process . Notably, these homo- and heterodimers have demonstrated potent biological activities, including antibacterial effects, cytotoxicity, , and potential applications in drug development . Given their promising charateristics, these compounds have garnered significant attention from both the biological and chemical research communities. , …”
