New direct restorative materials

Abstract: People worldwide have become increasingly aware of the potential adverse effects on the environment, of pollution control and of toxic effects of food, drugs and biomaterials. Amalgam and its potential toxic side effects (still scientifically unproven) continue to be discussed with increasing controversy by the media in some countries. Consequently, new direct restorative materials are now being explored by dentists, materials scientists and patients who are searching for the so-called 'amalgam substitute' or … Show more

“…Since the introduction of esthetic restorations to the market in 1993, the indication range of compomers has been extended to both anterior and posterior restorations of primary teeth [20][21][22] . By virtue of their high esthetics, good physical and mechanical properties, compomers can be accepted as an alternative to glass ionomer and hybrid composite restorative materials [23][24][25] . Recently, packable composite resins are also introduced for posterior restorations, and they may well gain a foothold in restorative dentistry for children 26) .…”

“…It was introduced more than 15 years ago and constitutes the only one that can be used both at the chairside and in the laboratory. 2,3 Several researchers have criticized the marginal fit of these restorations. 3,4 However, improvements in the CEREC apparatus and software have made the fit more acceptable through precise operating procedures.…”

“…2,3 Several researchers have criticized the marginal fit of these restorations. 3,4 However, improvements in the CEREC apparatus and software have made the fit more acceptable through precise operating procedures. 5 Numerous studies have evaluated the clinical success of computerassisted fabrication methods and in particular the marginal accuracy of these restorations, showing promising results.…”

“…Ormocer-based composite resins consisted of organic polymers, inorganic unit and inorganicorganic unit (polysiloxanes). 30 Dogan et al 24 suggested that bleaching agents might cause degradation in the organic polymers of ormocers. It has been found that surface roughness of the microfilled composite resins (Durafil) was the lowest values compared with themicrohybrid (GradiaDiect) and an Ormocerbased (Admira) resin composite upon HP bleaching.…”
