The wheat curl mite (WCM), Aceria tosichella, and the plant viruses it transmits represent an invasive mite-virus complex that has affected cereal crops worldwide. The main damage caused by WCM comes from its ability to transmit and spread multiple damaging viruses to cereal crops, with Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) and Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV) being the most important. Although WCM and transmitted viruses have been of concern to cereal growers and researchers for at least six decades, they continue to represent a challenge. In older affected areas, for example in North America, this mite-virus complex still has significant economic impact. In Australia and South America, where this problem has only emerged in the last decade, it represents a new threat to winter cereal production. The difficulties encountered in making progress towards managing WCM and its transmitted viruses stem from the complexity of the pathosystem. The most effective methods for minimizing losses from WCM transmitted viruses in cereal crops have previously focused on cultural and plant resistance methods. This paper brings together information on biological and ecological aspects of WCM, including its taxonomic status, occurrence, host plant range, damage symptoms and economic impact. Information about the main viruses transmitted by WCM is also included and the epidemiological relationships involved in this vectored complex of viruses are also addressed. Management strategies that have been directed at this mite-virus complex are presented, including plant resistance, its history, difficulties and advances. Current research perspectives to address this invasive mite-virus complex and minimize cereal crop losses worldwide are also discussed.

A new species of plant mite (Acari: Eriophyidae) was discovered on medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae), an annual grass that is native to central Asia and the Mediterranean Basin. It is invasive in western North America. Aculodes altamurgiensis sp. nov., is described here and differentiated from other Aculodes spp., on the basis of morphology. Its DNA fingerprinting was reported and compared with Aculodes mckenziei collected from Elymus repens and Bromus inermis. Pairwise comparison of MT-CO1 sequences between A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., and A. mckenziei revealed 20.2–21.5% genetic divergence between these congeneric species. First collected in Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia in Apulia, Italy in 2014, A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., has been subsequently collected from medusahead in Serbia, Bulgaria, Iran and Turkey. Based on these data and on preliminary observations on the effects of the mite on plant growth, A. altamurgiensis sp. nov., is currently being investigated as a candidate biological control agent of medusahead.

Aculodes Keifer (Eriophyidae) mites are often associated with grasses (Poaceae) and so far all species in this genus were described from the Northern hemisphere. During surveys of eriophyid mites from grasses conducted in Argentina aiming to determine the host range of the wheat curl mite, a new Aculodes species was collected from the feather grass, Stipa sp. The first Aculodes species is described from the Southern hemisphere. In addition to the traditional morphological description, DNA sequences of two genomic regions -the ITS rDNA and the 16S region mtDNA-were obtained and deposited in public databases; genetic distances of the new taxon with eriophyid species/genera associated with grasses are presented. In order to contribute to Aculodes taxonomy, a list for world grasses-associated species is provided and information on its morphological traits is summarized.

Abstract: Two new species, Aculodes mongolicus sp. n. from Hordeum brevisubulatum (Trin.) Link, Eriophyes bromusi sp. n. from Bromus inermis Leyss, are described from Mongolia. Four new records of eriophyoid mites collected from grasses in Mongolia are also presented.
