New High Donor Electrolyte for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract: The attainable specific energy of Li-S cells is largely affected by the electrolyteto-sulfur (E/S) ratio, with a low value [5] thereof being prerequisite to achieve a competitive energy density for a practical cell. However, the most commonly used electrolyte, a mixture of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) (i.e., v/v = 1:1), exhibits low Li 2 S 8 solubility of at most 0.7 m at room temperature. [6] This limited solubility constitutes an obstacle in the way of the full-depth utilization of sulfu… Show more

“…[ 4–6 ] To tackle these intractable caveats, strenuous efforts have been devoted to the rational design of cathodic configurations and/or sulfur host materials. [ 7–9 ] Amongst them, augmenting the interaction between hosts and PSs has in general been regarded as an effective strategy to accelerate the conversion kinetics of PSs and improve the utilization of sulfur toward high performance Li–S batteries.…”

“…Despite various drawbacks, due in particular to experimental problems, 5 the use of secondary, noncalorimetric, measurements to expand the scale, and traceability of the data, 15 the DN scale is still cited as a fundamental reference in state-of-the-art research on materials, 16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24 to cite only a few recent works.…”
