New host for raspberry bushy dwarf virus: arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus)

Abstract: Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) was detected in three new host plants in Rubus species, i.e., arctic bramble (R. arcticus ssp. arcticus), Alaskan arctic bramble (R. arcticus ssp. stellatus) and their hybrid (R. arcticus L. nothosubsp, stellarcticus G. Larsson). The virus was identified as RBDV by the symptoms elicited in the test plants Chenopodium quinoa and C. amaranticolor, by sedimentation profile in sucrose density gradient, by RNA banding pattern in agarose gel electrophoresis, by protein analysis of … Show more

“…raspberry hybrids, wild R. idaeus var. strigosus, R. occidentalis, R. parviflorus, R. leucodermis, R. multibracteatus, R. glaucus, R. arcticus) (Chamberlain et al 2003;Kokko et al 1996;Martin et al 2013;Quito-Avila et al 2013;Wall and Shamoun 1990). In 2003 the first natural RBDV infection of non-Rubus host was reported for grapevine from Slovenia (Mavrič et al 2003) and later also from Serbia and Hungary (Jevremović and Paunović 2011;Mavrič Pleško et al 2012;Czotter et al 2018).…”

“…Of 40 analyzed plant samples, 17 were found to contain two or three viruses. RBDV and BRNV have been previously identified in both cultivated and wild raspberries in Finland [7, 21, 39, 40]. In addition, RBDV has been detected in arctic brambles ( Rubus arcticus L.) in Finland [39, 41].…”

“…Idaeovirus rubi is one of two species in the genus Idaeovirus [1]. RBDV naturally infects members of the Rubus species, including black raspberry (R. occidentalis), blackberry (R. fruticosus), loganberry (R. loganobaccus), boysenberry (R. ursinus × idaeus), and arctic bramble (R. arcticus) [2][3][4][5], as well as grapevine [6] and cherry [7]. It is transmitted both horizontally and vertically through pollen [8,9].…”
