New Hybrid Steam-Solvent Processes for the Recovery of Heavy Oil and Bitumen

Abstract: Canada has declining reserves of conventional oil, but vast reserves of heavy oil and bitumen. Over 90% of the world's heavy oil and bitumen trapped in sandstones and carbonates are deposited in Canada and Venezuela. Up to 80% of estimated reserves could be recovered by in-situ thermal operation. The current in-situ thermal technologies such as cyclic steam stimulation (CSS), steam flooding and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) are energy intensive and use large quantities of fresh water. Increasing press… Show more

“…Those difficulties with experimental analysis can be partially overcome with numerical simulation, which was widely used to monitor the advancement of steam chambers (Lerat et al 2010;Leskiw and Gates 2012) and to optimize operational strategies (Zhao et al 2007;Mohebati et al 2010;Nguyen et al 2012). Law et al (2003) investigated field-scale SAGD performance in the presence of confined and unconfined top water.…”

“…The whole discovered bitumen reserves are about 5,505 billion barrels of initial oil in place, including 993 billion barrels as futuristic additional oil (USGS, 2007). Venezuela and North-America especially Canada have the greatest accumulation amounts of bitumen and heavy oil reserves in their carbonate and sandstone reservoirs (Nasr & Ayodele, 2006). Cold Lake, Athabasca and Peace River which possess more than 60% of total natural bitumen resources are located in Alberta State of Canada (Attanasi & Meyer, 2007).…”
