New Insight Into Antarctic Ice Sheet Properties Using an Improved Teleseismic P‐Wave Coda Autocorrelation Method

Abstract

In recent decades, people have paid increasing attention to the impact of climate change on human survival. One of the key issues is that the melting of Antarctic glaciers has caused sea levels to rise. According to Bedmap2 (Fretwell et al., 2013), the volume of water contained in the Antarctic ice sheet is 27 million km 3 . The potential melting of the ice will cause the sea level to rise by 58 m. This will be a huge disaster for cities or countries in coastal areas. Bedmap2 is an improved data set of Antarctica, which describes ice bed, surface and thickness, over previous data set Bedmap (Lythe & Vaughan, 2001). The datasets of Bedmap and Bedmap2 are mainly built on airborne radio-echo sounding (RES) measurements (Bingham & Siegert, 2007). The RES method can accurately detect the ice thickness and efficiently reveal the bed elevation. However, there are large data gaps between flight lines and echo free zones in deep glaciers (Pritchard, 2014). These factors lead to large uncertainties in the ice thickness in some areas of Bedmap2. To overcome the data gaps, Morlighem et al. (2020) proposed a new ice bed data set BedMachine using the mass conservation method. BedMachine reveals many basal features which were previously unknown. As more temporary seismic stations are deployed in the Antarctic region, many passive seismological methods have been successfully used to detect the thickness of the Antarctic ice sheet, such as
