A striking example of plant/pollinator trait matching is found between Andean species of Passiflora with 6–14-cm-long nectar tubes and the sword-billed hummingbird, Ensifera ensifera , with up to 11-cm-long bills. Because of the position of their anthers and stigmas, and self-incompatibility, these passionflower species depend on E. ensifera for pollination. Field observations show that the bird and plant distribution match completely and that scarcity of Ensifera results in reduced passionflower seed set. We here use nuclear and plastid DNA sequences to investigate how often and when these mutualisms evolved and under which conditions, if ever, they were lost. The phylogeny includes 26 (70%) of the 37 extremely long-tubed species, 13 (68%) of the 19 species with tubes too short for Ensifera and four of the seven bat-pollinated species for a total of 43 (69%) of all species in Passiflora supersection Tacsonia (plus 11 outgroups). We time-calibrated the phylogeny to infer the speed of any pollinator switching. Results show that Tacsonia is monophyletic and that its stem group dates to 10.7 Ma, matching the divergence at 11.6 Ma of E. ensifera from its short-billed sister species. Whether pollination by short-billed hummingbirds or by Ensifera is the ancestral condition cannot be securely inferred, but extremely long-tubed flowers exclusively pollinated by Ensifera evolved early during the radiation of the Tacsonia clade. There is also evidence of several losses of Ensifera dependence, involving shifts to bat pollination and shorter billed birds. Besides being extremely asymmetric—a single bird species coevolving with a speciose plant clade—the Ensifera / Passiflora system is a prime example of a specialized pollinator not driving plant speciation, but instead being the precondition for the maintenance of isolated populations (through reliable seed set) that then underwent allopatric speciation.

ResumoPassifloraceae possui 17 gêneros e cerca de 750 espécies. O gênero Passiflora, possui aproximadamente 525 espécies, distribuídas nas regiões tropicais do Novo Mundo, Ásia e Austrália, e está subdividido em quatro subgêneros: Astrophea, Decaloba, Passiflora e Deidamioides. Este trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a ocorrência de caracteres diagnósticos e fornecer subsídios para a taxonomia do grupo. Para tanto, foram analisadas oito espécies: Passiflora capsularis, Passiflora misera, Passiflora morifolia, Passiflora organensis, Passiflora pohlii, Passiflora suberosa, Passiflora tricuspis e Passiflora vespertilio. Foram estudados de três a seis indivíduos de cada espécie, obtidos a partir das coleções herborizadas dos herbários do Departamento de Botânica da UFPR (UPCB) e do Museu Botânico Municipal (MBM), ambos em Curitiba-PR. Para o estudo anatômico, as amostras foliares foram submetidas ao processo de reidratação e, posteriormente, incluidas em historesina seguindo técnicas usuais utilizadas em anatomia vegetal. Alguns caracteres se destacaram com valor taxonômico e com potencial uso em estudos filogenéticos, como a presença de papilas epidérmicas, cutícula ornamentada e sistema vascular em arco. Os resultados indicam que estudos mais detalhados sobre a estrutura das papilas epidérmicas e dos tipos de tricomas tectores trarão mais informações para o entendimento das relações em Decaloba e os outros subgenêros. The genus Passiflora has about 525 species distributed in tropical regions of the New World, Asia and Australia. Passiflora is subdivided in four subgenera: Astrophea, Decaloba, Passiflora, Deidamioides. The goal of this work is to verify the utility of selected anatomical features as diagnose or taxonomical characters. Three to six individuals of eight species of Passiflora, subgenus Decaloba were used: Passiflora capsularis, Passiflora misera, Passiflora morifolia, Passiflora organensis, Passiflora pohlii, Passiflora suberosa, Passiflora tricuspis and Passiflora vespertilio. Samples were obtained from Herbarium collections of the Herbarium of the Departamento de Botânica da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UPCB) and Museu Botânico Municipal (MBM), Curitiba-PR. For the anatomical study, leaf samples were embedded in Historesin following usual anatomical procedures. Some features can be highlighted as taxonomic useful, and of potential use in phylogenetic studies, such as ornamented cuticle, presence of epidermal papillae and the shape of central vascular system. Results have indicated that detailed studies of papillae structure and types of trichomes might bring additional relevant information for the better understanding of the relations within Decaloba and other subgenera.

Within the huge diversity of genus Passiflora, series Laurifoliae constitutes a strikingly uniform group, widely distributed in neotropical rain forests, at low to moderate elevations. Given its morphological and ecological unity, Killip mentionned it as an «exceedingly difficult» group. The lack of clear morphological criteria has not helped in delimiting it, and the confusion has grown with the addition of new species and criteria. As a preliminary step in the study of diversity within series Laurifoliae, we re-examine its morphological delimitation, assessing how its current 29 species (including the highly similar P. pachyantha and P. killipiana) conform to 20 criteria from different authors. Three criteria (indumentum on vegetative parts, stipule glands, membranous limen) appear to be irrelevant, because they are either too variable or rarely recorded in the species descriptions. Using the 17 remaining ones, 24 typical species show very limited variations, five of them differing by only one criterion. Among them, we retain terete to angular stem, setaceous or linear stipules soon deciduous, petiolar glands in one pair, leaves oblong, neither peltate nor lobate, three glandular bract over 1 cm long and free, flowers pendent, with two campanulate outer series of filaments (most other series much reduced or aborted). Five species, P. guazumaefolia, P. kikiana, P. odontophylla, P. ischnoclada, and P. maliformis, differ by three to nine traits, not found in the typical representatives of the series, so they can be excluded from it. Passiflora kikiana should be classified into series Kermesinae. For the four other ones, a satisfactory solution implies a more global study, involving other series.
