New insights into the phenotypes of atopic dermatitis linked with allergies and asthma in children: An overview

Abstract: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a complex disease with multiple causes and complex mechanistic pathways according to age of onset, severity of the illness, ethnic modifiers, response to therapy and triggers. A group of difficult-to-manage patients characterized by early-onset AD and severe lifelong disease associated with allergic asthma and/or food allergy (FA) has been identified. In this study, we focus on these severe phenotypes, analysing their links with other atopic comorbidities, and taking into account the … Show more

“…Tsakok et al found that food sensitization was 6 times higher in the first 3 months of life in children with AD compared to controls. Several other studies focusing on specific allergens (ie, egg and peanut allergy) have found the same significant association between food allergy in early childhood and AD …”

“…However, we did not collect DNA to address this possibility. Finally, recent studies suggest persistent AD is causally related to subsequent development of other atopic diseases, and it would therefore be relevant to explore if the personal AD medication history could be an even earlier predictor, for example for development of atopic asthma in AD patients.…”

“…Several studies reported that family history of atopy, early onset AD, higher initial severity of atopic eczema, hens' egg sensitization and male sex are associated with an increased risk of asthma in childhood (33). Furthermore, the percentage of patients with severe asthma and concomitant eczema is greater than expected and close relationship between asthma and atopic dermatitis severity has been reported (34).…”
