New Polycaprolactone-Containing Self-Healing Coating Design for Enhance Corrosion Resistance of the Magnesium and Its Alloys

Abstract: The method of hybrid coating formation on the surface of a bioresorbable wrought magnesium alloy and magnesium obtained by additive technology was proposed. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) with subsequent treatment of the material using an organic biocompatible corrosion inhibitor and a bioresorbable polymer material was used to obtain the protective layers. The optimal method of surface treatment was suggested. Using SEM/EDX analysis, XRD, XPS, and confocal Raman microspectroscopy, the composition of the … Show more

“…Corrosion current density and values of the corrosion rate are slightly changed compared to the impedance modulus measured at the lowest frequency. The discrepancy in the EIS and PDP data was shown in the previous work [ 80 ]. However, the HC-D-1 sample has the best protective properties according to EIS and PDP measurements ( Table 1 and Table 2 ).…”

“…Thus, further study of the properties and methods of applying biodegradable polymeric materials, as well as the possibility of their combination with other protective technologies, will significantly expand the use of magnesium and its alloys in biomedicine. Among other synthetic biopolymers, polycaprolactone (PCL) has excellent physicochemical properties [ 80 ], including biodegradability [ 81 ], biocompatibility [ 82 ], structural stability [ 83 ], low melting point, and elasticity [ 84 ].…”

“…The formation of the base oxide coating was accomplished using a PC-controlled plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) unit. The specimens were treated in aqueous solution of 25 g/L Na 2 SiO 3 and 7 g/L NaF, employing a combined bipolar mode in two steps [6].…”

“…Alternately, increasing and decreasing values of the impedance modulus measured at the lowest frequency for composite inhibitor-containing coatings can characterize the self-healing properties of the protective layers. Such wave-like line trend of changing |Z| f =0.1Hz was previously detected for the inhibitor-containing coatings formed on magnesium alloys and assigned as a self-healing effect [ 17 ].…”

“…Coatings obtained using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) have excellent adhesion to a substrate (including aluminum and its alloys) [ 13 ]. These coatings are also characterized by ease of formation and a wide range of composition, microstructure, porosity, and roughness of the resulting layers, which was provided by varying the composition of the electrolyte and modes of the PEO process [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Many research groups used the PEO method to modify the surface of the aluminum alloys.…”
