New primary renal diagnosis codes for the ERA-EDTA

Abstract: The European Renal Association-European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Registry has produced a new set of primary renal diagnosis (PRD) codes that are intended for use by affiliated registries. It is designed specifically for use in renal centres and registries but is aligned with international coding standards supported by the WHO (International Classification of Diseases) and the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization (SNOMED Clinical Terms). It is available as su… Show more

“…Moreover, accurate coding of primary renal diagnose could not be verified retrospectively, because no renal biopsy data were available. Indeed, although the French thesaurus seems more comprehensive than the ERA-EDTA Study diagnostic codes (33,34), it might not have corresponded exactly to the evolving classification of MGs. Another pitfall is the possible overlap of MGs: there can be multiple causes of ESRD in a single patient with MM or ALA. Also, patients considered as having ESRD but recovering renal function during the follow-up had, in fact, prolonged AKI.…”

“…A mixture of old and new (2012) ERA-EDTA codes for primary diagnoses [2] were received from centres. The split was about 50 : 50 for 2014 incident patients.…”

“…The patient-reported etiology of kidney disease was validated by cross-referencing the reported etiology of kidney disease in their medical records or kidney biopsy reports, if available. Etiology of kidney disease was categorized into 6 major categories based on the ERA-EDTA coding system [13]: familial/hereditary nephropathy, congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (including reflux nephropathy and congenital hypoplasia/dysplasia of the kidneys), glomerular disease, tubulo-interstitial kidney disease, systemic diseases affecting the kidney and miscellaneous renal disorders. Etiology of kidney disease was classified according to the physician-stated diagnosis in the patient's medical records or diagnosis as per renal biopsy report.…”
