New pyridine-containing non-cyclic and macrocyclic Schiff bases: synthesis and interferon-inducing activity

Abstract: A series of new Schiff bases containing the Hantzsch pyridine skeleton has been synthesized by reaction of an appropriate aldehyde with 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-pyridinedicarboxhydrazide. The structure of the final products, which was highly dependent on the nature of the starting aldehyde, could readily be ascertained by their spectral data. 2,6-Dimethyl-3,5-pyridinedicarboxhydrazide itself and some of its derivatives emerged as potential interferon inducers.

“…This property has been documented in numerous studies, highlighting the potential of Schiff bases in pharmaceutical applications. [6][7][8][9][10] The ease of synthesis and versatility of Schiff bases make them valuable entities in organic chemistry, with promising applications in drug development. Thus, Schiff bases demonstrate a diverse range of biological activities and medicinal applications, as evidenced by their potential roles in antibacterial, 11 antioxidant, 12 DNA binding affinity, 13 antiinflammatory, 14 antifungal, 15 anticancer, [16][17][18] as well as antidiabetic and antimicrobial activities.…”

“…A number of azomethines and their complexes possess high biological activity, including antineoplastic 8,9 and antiviral. 10 It has been recently shown that the macrocyclic Schiff bases can also recognize and selectively bind different anions acting as artificial anionic receptors. 11 Introduction of a template agent is the most reliable method to prevent oligocondensation and switch a process toward forming macrocyclic Schiff bases IV.…”

It has been recently shown that the macrocyclic Schiff bases can also recognize and selectively bind different anions acting as artificial anionic receptors …”
