New record of a sharpnose sevengill shark Heptranchias perlo (Elasmobranchii, Hexanchidae) from the Balearic Sea, western Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: In March 2018, an immature female sharpnose sevengill shark Heptranchias perlo was caught by a commercial bottom trawler in the Ibiza Channel. This represents the first substantiated record of the species around the Balearic Islands (GSA05) and the second record from off the Spanish Levantine coasts. This paper includes a review of the records of H. perlo in the Mediterranean as an aid to future conservation assessments.

“…An example is the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus), which is abundant in the Mediterranean by direct observation of bycatch by the trawl fleet in the area [21], but still very difficult to study and observe in situ. The challenge is now to obtain more in situ images and contribute to a better knowledge of these and other rare species, such as the seven-gill shark (Heptranchias perlo) [38] in the Balearic Island waters.…”

Their stomach contents comprised partially digested southern shortfin squids, Illex coindetii (Vérany, 1837).…”

“…The sharpnose sevengill shark, Heptranchias perlo (Bonnaterre, 1788), is a small yet voracious shark found worldwide, except for the northeast Pacific (Guallart et al, 2019). This shark is (bathy)demersal, primarily inhabiting outer shelves and upper slopes from depths of 180 to 450 m (Castro et al, 1999) but can be found at depths ranging from 0 to 1000 m (Hennemann, 2001).…”
