Air merupakan kebutuhan mendasar bagi seluruh makhluk hidup sebagai sumber kehidupan utama. Sehingga perlu dilakukan pengamanan kualitas air bersih yang layak dan aman digunakan, serta memenuhi standar yang berlaku. PT. Semen Indonesia telah melaksanakan kegiatan pengolahan air untuk memenuhi kebutuhan air untuk operasional pabrik dan perkantoran. Pada PT. Semen Indonesia, pengelolaan air yang efektif dan efisien menjadi salah satu pilar sebagai upaya perlindungan terhadap lingkungan. Hal tersebut menjadi strategi, target, dan inisiatif dari perusahaan untuk mencapai tujuan keberlanjutan. Proses koagulasi dan flokulasi merupakan proses penting sebagai kunci dalam pengolahan air. Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) telah banyak digunakan sebagai koagulan dalam proses pengolahan air. Sisi lain, tepung jagung telah teruji mampu digunakan sebagai koagulan karena merupakan senyawa polimer polieletrolit bersifat negatif, dengan gugus karboksil, hidroksil, dan amida, yang berperan sebagai koagulan. Biokoagulan dari tepung jagung diperoleh dari ekstraksi tepung jagung dengan NaCl 1 M. Efektifitas dan efisiensi dari koagulan diuji dengan menggunakan metode jar test. Aspek yang diuji yakni pH, kekeruhan, dan warna, dengan variabel berupa jenis koagulan dan dosis koagulan. Penelitian ini membandingkan kemampuan PAC dan biokoagulan tepung jagung sebagai koagulan pada proses pengolahan air di PT. Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tepung jagung mampu bersifat sebagai bahan koagulan. Namun, biokoagulan tersebut tidak lebih efektif ataupun efisien jika dibandingkan dengan PAC.

Pollution indexes are instruments that allow a quick interpretation of water quality, combining physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters to generate a numerical value. Our aim was to evaluate spatial and temporal-spatial water quality and propose a water pollution index (WPI) for high Andean rivers using multivariate statistics. Data on physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters were collected from the river water of the Chumbao sub-basin during the rainy and dry seasons at eight sampling points. The laboratory and field analysis methods were developed following the methodology proposed by the APHA. Spearman’s correlation, cluster analysis, and discriminate analysis were applied to evaluate water quality’s spatial and temporal variation and principal component analysis/factor analysis to identify critical parameters to formulate the Water Pollution Index (WPI). The parameters with the most incidence in water quality were color, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, biochemical demand oxygen, ammonia, total phosphorus, lead, chromium, and thermotolerant coliforms. The inorganic pollution index (IPI) was obtained from conductivity, lead, and chromium, reporting pollution levels for the river water between “none” to “high”; and the organic pollution index (OPI) was obtained from dissolved oxygen, biochemical demand oxygen, ammonia, total phosphorus, color, and thermotolerant coliforms, with levels of “low” to “very high” pollution. The proposed pollution indexes are water management instruments that evaluate water quality.

For most natural or naturally-derived liquid products, their color reflects on their quality and occasionally affects customer preferences. To date, there are a few subjective and objective methods for color measurement which are currently utilized by various industries. Researchers are also improving these methods and inventing new methods, as color is proven to have the ability to provide various information on the condition and quality of the liquid. However, a review on the methods, especially for amber-colored liquid, has not been conducted yet. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the subjective and objective methods for color measurement of amber-colored liquids. The pros and cons of the measurement methods, the effects of the color on customer preferences, and the international industry standards on color measurements are reviewed and discussed. In addition, this study elaborates on the issues and challenges related to the color measurement techniques as well as recommendations for future research. This review demonstrates that the existing color measurement technique can determine the color according to the standards and color scales. However, the efforts toward minimizing the complexity of the hardware while maximizing the signal processing through advanced computation are still lacking. Therefore, through this critical review, this review can hopefully intensify the efforts toward finding an optimized method or technique for color measurement of liquids and thus expedite the development of a portable device that can measure color accurately.
