New technologies and therapeutic approaches for the management of pediatric diabetes

Abstract: Evolving trends in technology and therapeutic strategies create a very exciting time for the management of diabetes. Technology, like the internet, helps us to keep up with this fast-paced, changing world of diabetes. New therapies most often begin with adult clinical trials; once safety and efficacy are demonstrated, practice recommendations follow for the pediatric population. The Diabetes Research Working Group has defined potentially important new directions and technologies for diabetes research. The grou… Show more

“…New technologies can serve as motivators to increase monitoring behavior. 10 For example, recent advances use microliters of blood to obtain glucose readings in seconds and include meters with extended memory capabilities that link to personal computers providing glucose trend data. Other computer-based or telemedicine-directed approaches offer diabetes education and support yielding behavior modification results similar to those found with person-to-person education.…”

“…People with diabetes face a life-long optimization problem to continue glycemic control without increasing their risk of hypoglycemia [ 17 ]. The developing trends in technology and therapeutic strategies create a very exciting time for the management of diabetes [ 18 ]. PCGM, being relatively novel technology, has been shown to be helpful and offers the potential to improve care for patients with T1DM beyond what can be achieved with SMBG alone [ 19 ].…”

“…Lawlor and Laffel 11 have discussed many of the newer technologies and therapeutic approaches that might now be used for diabetes management in children and young adults. It is both exciting and challenging to note that, at the end of their 2001 article, they anticipated that it would soon be outdated, as technologies and therapeutic approaches to diabetes management continue to change rapidly.…”
