NIEL DOSE Analysis on Triple Junction Cells 30% Efficient and Related Single Junctions

Abstract: -A major limitation in current liquid phase crystallized (LPC) silicon thin-film record solar cells are optical losses caused by their planar glass-silicon interface. In this study, silicon is grown on nanoimprinted periodically as well as on randomly textured glass substrates and successfully implemented into state-of-the-art LPC silicon thin-film solar cell stacks. By systematically varying every layer the whole sample stack is optimized regarding its anti-reflection ability. Compared to an optimized planar … Show more

“…As expected by the literature, the tested cells are more sensitive to the irradiation dose than to the particle energy 6,10,16 : Congruently, we observe that the arising of a middle-limited regime in EOL2 sample is fundamentally due to the employed high dose, which is more intense with respect to the case of EOL1 sample, rather than the kind and energy of the involved particles, as pointed out in previous studies. 32,33 It is also worth noting that this RWRI technique is able to provide a strong remark of the occurrence of a current limitation driven by the middle subcell (middle-limited cell condition): Actually, a strong qualitative difference is displayed between the behavior of the curves in top-limited configuration (BOL and EOL1, Figures 4 and 5, respectively) and in middle-limited configuration (EOL2, Figure 6).…”

“…It should be remarked that the energy of incoming protons has to be modified as a function of the depth into the device, according to the amount of energy deposited which can be calculated (by means of SRIM [12]) from the stopping power in each absorbing layer [6,7]. In this work, the TJ solar cell was approximated by a GaAs cell single junction cell since the middle cell is the one that mainly affects the overall TJ performances at EOL.…”

“…The optical properties of both texture types, the periodic sinusoidal and random MST texture, have been studied experimentally in a preceding conference proceeding [15]. By systematically varying every layer the entire sample stack has been optimized regarding its anti-reflection ability.…”
