Nigerian neonatologists perception and experience with retinopathy of prematurity

Abstract: Background: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an avoidable condition that affects premature infants exposed to oxygen stresses at or soon after birth. In low- and middle-income countries, like Nigeria, neonatal mortality rates are high and very few infants live to develop ROP. With recent better care, ROP is now being diagnosed. Objective: This study aimed to characterize what Nigerian neonatologists understand about ROP. Methods: At a joint meeting of Nigerian pediatric ophthalmologists and neonatologists i… Show more

“…The severe respiratory condition of immaturity, recognized as Neonatal Bronchopulmonary (NB), is among the most prevalent side effects of natural and incredibly preterm babies age [1][2][3][4]. Around 15-25% of newborns under the age of 32 weeks and 60% of infants over 28 weeks are affected by NB, and it is related to the high incidence and mortality that has hard impact on human health and cognitive function.…”

“…The progress achieved in studying the genesis, diagnosis, and treatment of NB during the decade is presented in the analysis of existing studies on this subject [ 1 ]. Bedside lung examinations and chest X-rays are conducted regularly in neonatal Intelligent Medical Care (IMC) to protect the condition of newborns with lung issues [ 2 ]. Thoracic Crosses can be hard to interpret, specifically in NB babies who have various germ cell configurations, since it is difficult to distinguish between pulmonary, visceral, and sinus abnormalities on these images.…”

“…It is similar to other studies which highlighted the nonavailability of experienced ophthalmologists as well as incompatible screening guidelines. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Mean knowledge score among the participants was 14.12 ± 4.14 out of the total score of 22 points. Managing ROP is a collaborative work that requires a multidisciplinary team, where the pediatricians, who are the first-line physicians, detect ROP and refer preterm infants to the Ophthalmologists who confirm the diagnosis and initiate the treatment.…”

“…5 A study done among Nigerian neonatologists in 2021, revealed that only one third had seen a case of ROP (n=15,29.41%), none were aware of local screening guidelines. 6 In a study measuring the level of awareness about ROP among NICU nurses, most of the nurses (38, 68%) had overall poor knowledge with the mean knowledge scores of 14.07 ± 2.06. 7 Some study showed that there was a very high level of awareness among pediatricians regarding ROP 8 , whereas, other studies indicated that the awareness level among them was not adequate.…”
