Nighttime Bracing With the Providence Brace in Adolescent Girls With Idiopathic Scoliosis

Abstract: Excellent initial in-brace correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was observed with this computer-designed and manufactured recumbent brace. Patients with high apex curves cephalad to T8 (n = 31) had a success rate of 61% compared with a success rate of 79% (n = 71) if the apex was at or below T9. Compared with previous natural history and the prospective study data, the Providence brace is effective in preventing progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis for curves <35 degrees. It was effective fo… Show more

“…Historically, brace design has been based on a single classification differentiating between single and double curve patterns. In 2001, d'Amato and collaborators published a paper presenting the results of nighttime bracing with the Providence brace in adolescent girls with IS [15], where brace design was based on a simple classification. The Providence brace system proposes three basic models: lumbar, thoracolumbar and double curve brace designs, with an extension available for high thoracic curves.…”

“…It is well known that the effectiveness of brace treatment depends on the primary in-brace correction and patient compliance [5,11,19]. Compliance is defined as the degree to which patients correctly follow the instructions regarding the brace treatment, and non compliance with brace treatment is a well known problem [11,15].…”

“…The Providence brace was developed by D’Amato, Griggs and McCoy in the mid-1990s 53. The brace works by the application of controlled, direct, lateral and rotational forces on the trunk to move the spine toward the midline or beyond the midline.…”

“…Compared with natural history and on the basis of the prospective data from the study by Nachemson et al .,2 the Providence brace is found to be effective in preventing curve progression of deformities less than 35° and low apex curves of over 35°. It is more successful in curves with apex at or below T9 compared to curves with apex cephalad to T8 4853…”
