The bioactivity of humic acids (HA) is mainly due to the presence of auxin analogs. In turn, nitric oxide (NO) production in plants affects root growth and may result from endogenous auxin production or the application of synthetic auxin analogs or HA. Nitric oxide signaling may be related to the bioactivity of the HA. Although the auxin, NO, and ROS-mediated activity of HA has been studied, no studies exist on their effects in Ocimum basilicum L., commonly known as basil. A study under controlled in vitro conditions was performed using hairy roots (hairy roots) of basil grown in medium with N- ) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 100 µM), an NO donor, either without or with 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO; 200 µM), an NO scavenger. The addition of HA and SNP resulted in significant increases in the root growth, associated with increased NO and reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents. The application of the NO scavenger cPTIO with the SNP and HA decreased the effects of both substances on the root growth and endogenous levels of the NO and ROS. The increased root growth promoted by the NO donor (SNP) and HA was also associated with increased proton pump and catalase activity for both N- NO− levels tested. The resultsshowed that the effects of HA are dependent on NO and ROS, which act as messengers, inducing root growth.

Polyamines (PAs) and nitric oxide (NO) are vital signals in modulating plant response to abiotic stress. However, to our knowledge, studies on the relationship between NO and PAs in response to cold stress in tomato are limited. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the effects of putrescine (Put) and spermidine (Spd) on NO generation and the function of Spd-induced NO in the tolerance of tomato seedling under chilling stress. Spd increased NO release via the nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-like and nitrate reductase (NR) enzymatic pathways in the seedlings, whereas Put had no such effect. Moreover, H 2 O 2 might act as an upstream signal to stimulate NO production. Both exogenous NO donor (sodium nitroprusside (SNP)) and Spd enhanced chilling tolerance in tomato, thereby protecting the photosynthetic system from damage. Compared to chilling treatment alone, Spd enhanced the gene expressions of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and their enzyme activities in tomato leaves. However, a scavenger or inhibitor of NO abolished Spd-induced chilling tolerance and blocked the increased expression and activity due to Spd of these antioxidant enzymes in tomato leaves under chilling stress. The results showed that NO induced by Spd plays a crucial role in tomato's response to chilling stress.

Root plasticity is an important trait for plants to forage nutrient and adapt to survival in a complicated environment. Lateral roots (LRs) are generally more sensitive than primary roots in response to changing environmental conditions. As the main source of nitrogen for most higher plants, nitrate acting as a signal has received great attention in the regulation of LR development. In general, there are dual effects including stimulatory and inhibitory of low nitrate on LR development; while high nitrate supply has an inhibitory effect on LR development; nitrate heterogeneity also has a stimulatory effect on LR development in NO3–- rich zone. Here, we focus on recent progresses in the role of a nitrate signal in the regulation of the LRs development.
