Nitric oxide generated by nitrate reductase increases nitrogen uptake capacity by inducing lateral root formation and inorganic nitrogen uptake under partial nitrate nutrition in rice

Abstract: HighlightNO generated by nitrate reductase plays a pivotal role in improving N-use efficiency by increasing lateral root initiation and inorganic N uptake, representing a strategy for rice to adapt to fluctuating nitrate supply.

“…Considering what was discussed above, and accepting the role of NO on root growth promotion [11] [12] [13], the present results indicate that HA addition promoted an increase in NO levels. This process was analyzed by fluorescence microscopy ( Figure 4 and Figure 5), and similar responses to those previously observed for the addition of auxin were found [14].…”

“…Nitric oxide plays a central role in the determination of the root morphology and developmental pattern [11] [12] [13]. [14] used an NO scavenger to prevent the formation of lateral and adventitious roots and root gravitropic response, indicating an important role of endogenous NO in mediating these processes.…”

“…Therefore, it still needs to be clarified whether they did encode relative genes or affect enzyme synthesis. Furthermore, we also examined the contents of NO in tomato leaves after treatment with tungstate, an inhibitor of NR, and L-NAME, an inhibitor of NOS (Besson-Bard et al, 2009;Xiong et al, 2012;Alemayehu et al, 2015;Sun et al, 2015). In this experiment, the two inhibitors (Figs.…”

“…In rice, NO generated by the nitrate reductase (NR) could improve the N acquisition capacity by increasing LR initiation under partial nitrate nutrition (Sun et al, 2015). However, a study in maize supported that NO played a key role in early nitrate perception and could induce a more elevated primary root elongation after low nitrate resupply (Manoli et al, 2014).…”
