Nitric Oxide Generator Based on Pulsed Arc Discharge

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is increasingly being used in medical applications. Currently, a gas cylinder of N2 mixed with a high concentration of NO is used in the NO inhalation system. However, this arrangement is potentially risky due to the possibility of accidental leak of NO from the cylinder. The presence of NO in air leads to the formation of nitric dioxide (NO2), which is toxic to the lungs. Therefore, an on-site generation of NO would be very desirable for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome and … Show more

“…Other investigations have used specific ratios of nitrogen and oxygen mixtures in their starting gaseous environment, which led to the intentional production of nitric oxide [27]. This concept was expanded upon leading to the proposal of a nitric oxide generator for therapeutic purposes [28]. Characterization of plasma constituents is critical, if mechanisms for observed results are to be postulated with accuracy.…”

“…From the aforementioned reasoning, it is of interest to compare the conditions of NO generation in our experiments with the conditions in the papers [43] and [44], where the high-current spark discharge with a duration of about several microseconds had been used. A typical energy in the spark was of 5 J at a pulse-repetition rate of 2 Hz.…”

“…Among the active particles, the molecules of nitrogen oxides and ozone have a significant place, particularly for the biomedical applications. Nitric monoxide is widely used in inhalation therapy because it has a relaxing effect on the blood vessels [43], [44]. The flows of nitrogen oxides and ozone generated in the plasma jets are applied for disinfection of wounds and skin wound healing [45].…”
