Catalytic Approaches to Monomers for Polymers Based on Renewables

Polymers are used in simple consumer items like carpets, furniture, glues, and clothing but are also used in advanced engineering, including materials used in the aerospace industry. Therefore, polymers and consequently their monomers play an important role in our everyday life. Currently, most of the monomers are produced from fossil resources, the supply of which is diminishing. In this paper we review strategies and catalytic processes to obtain currently used and potentially new monomers from renewable bio-based feedstocks and platform chemicals. This Review is divided by type of monomer and includes diacids and esters, diols, hydroxy acids and esters, lactones, carbonates, cyclic ethers, diamines, amino acids and lactams, alkenes, acrylics, and conjugated dienes. Only routes based on the use of homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, or bio-catalysis are described. Fermentative processes are not discussed.

Uncured Polybenzimidazole‐Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (PBI‐NBR) insulation experiences altered chemical and bonding phenomena if exposed to ambient conditions while in a sheet‐stock configuration. Multiple lots of a PBI‐NBR formulation exposed to ambient and slightly elevated temperature (100°F) conditions experience bonding degradation when vulcanized to a metal substrate. Chemical analyses show that tallow amine (clay particle surfactant) accumulates at the surface of uncured NBR as a function of ambient and 100°F exposure time. Additionally, thin film analyses suggest surface oxidation of NBR polymers when exposed to the ambient environment. Mechanical and chemical observations imply a correlation between vulcanized bonding performance with tallow amine diffusion and polymer surface reaction. The diffusion and reactivity of chemical species found in the PBI‐NBR formulation has implications to other fields employing these components. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study, mechanical properties, oil resistance of Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) as material of an automotive were investigated at low temperature conditions. In order to find the optimum formulation used various grades of NBR with different contents of Acrylonitrile (ACN) such as NT1846F, DN407, B7150, B6240 and N215SL. The mechanical properties, oil and low temperature resistance of NBR were measured using moving die rheometer, durometer, universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimetry, and Gehman tester. The hardness was increased with an increased ACN contents. The low temperature resistance, and degree of swelling were increased that decreased ACN contents have lower Tg, lower value of Gehaman test.
