Nitrogen and calcium fertilization on the growth and development of gerbera cultivated in pots for cut flowers

Abstract: Gerbera is a flowering species with relevance to the cut flower market. Understanding nutritional requirements of the species is important to improve fertilization procedures. In the present work, our objective was to evaluate the influence of different doses of nitrogen (N) and calcium (Ca) on the growth and development of gerbera cultivated in pots as a cut flower. The experiment was conducted in a protected environment in a bifactorial design, with an additional treatment consisting of the combination of th… Show more

“…Nitrogen deficiency leads to stunted growth, and general plant weakness. Excess nitrogen, on the other hand, can lead to overly lush vegetative growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting [52]. Carbon is the basic element of all organic compounds in plants, is the main source of energy for plants and provides the basis for building their structures.…”

“…Floral diversity is a strength of the sector that increases temporal relevance and maintains commercial dynamics. The impact of fertilization in cut flowers has had important technological advances not only in flower production but also in the use of nutrient solutions (Bose et al, 2019) both inorganic and inorganic, relating elements such as silica (Kumari et al, 2023), calcium and nitrogen (Milani et al, 2020(Milani et al, , 2021, or zinc (Shaheen et al, 2015), as well as the use of organic solutions (Altaee and Alsawaf, 2021;Mancini and De Lucia, 2011).…”

“…The effect obtained for this moderator was positive, resulting in an increase in vase life of 4.766 days (Figure 3). Gerbera exhibits a prolonged vase life and good durability, and is commonly used in floral arrangements and bouquets (Milani et al, 2021). As it ranks fourth in the global market trend among cut flowers, there is a need to develop new technologies to extend its post-harvest vase life (Alikhani et al, 2021;Timalsina et al, 2023).…”
