Nitrogen and phosphorus uptake and nitrogen fixation estimation of faba bean in western Canada

Abstract: Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) has very efficient dinitrogen (N2) fixation, the greatest among grain legumes. The main aims of this study were to investigate the effect of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers on yield, N and P uptake, and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) potential of faba bean. Four faba bean cultivars (‘CDC Snowdrop’, ‘219‐16’, ‘Snowbird’, and ‘Tabasco’) were grown in a 2‐yr field experiment at four site‐locations in Saskatchewan, Canada, during 2016 and 2017. In addition, a controlled‐en… Show more

“…Similar seed yields were observed by other researchers and especially in the Mediterranean area [68][69][70][71], indicating that these genotypes can be cultivated in this area. Seed yield was not always affected by P fertilization as P is immobilized in the soil [67,68,[72][73][74][75].…”

“…It has gained importance for its seeds high protein content, nutritional value and its environmental benefits (Kopke & Nemecek, 2010 ). Faba bean has an efficient nitrogen fixation ability through symbiosis in its root nodules, higher than any other pulse crop (Hardarson et al, 1991 ; Klippenstein et al, 2022 ). Its seeds have a high protein content (29% of dry matter), as well as carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins, and micronutrients (Khazaei & Vandenberg, 2020 ).…”
