Nitrogen fertilization weakens the linkage between soil carbon and microbial diversity: A global meta‐analysis

Abstract: Soil microbes make up a significant portion of the genetic diversity and play a critical role in belowground carbon (C) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Soil microbial diversity and organic C are often tightly coupled in C cycling processes; however, this coupling can be weakened or broken by rapid global change. A global meta-analysis was performed with 1148 paired comparisons extracted from 229 articles published between January 1998 and December 2021 to determine how nitrogen (N) fertilization affects the… Show more

“…Our results showed that Cutaneotrichosporon and Apiotrichum were significantly associated with AN and TN. AN enrichment decreased soil fungal diversity due to toxic of more protons or weaken the linkage between soil carbon and fungal diversity ( Yang et al, 2022c ). Moreover, AN enrichment might aggravate the water limitation by promoting plant growth that were proved by the increase of plant biomass according our results.…”

“…Its precise interpretation can help in successfully achieving this aim. Many such sampling-based studies frequently interpret the vegetation at habitats, ecosystems, and regional and global levels (Khan et al, 2011;Longo et al, 2019;Abbas et al, 2021;Ahmad et al, 2022b;Anwar et al, 2022;Haq et al, 2022;Munyasya et al, 2022;Rasheed et al, 2022;Yang et al, 2022). Such studies interpret the intricate vegetation structure more meaningfully in relation to the abiotic environment (Khan et al, 2017;Miao et al, 2018;Ahmad et al, 2021Ahmad et al, , 2022aIqbal et al, 2021;Ali et al, 2022a,b;Hussain et al, 2022;.…”

“…Nitrogen-based synthetic fertilizers can change forest carbon distribution [69]. Results from a worldwide meta-analysis from 1998 to 2021 proved that nitrogen fertilizers significantly decrease soil bacterial and fungal diversity, affecting the soil's important carbon content [70]. Adding nitrogen to soil also plays a critical role in soil respiration.…”
