Nitrogen removal via nitrite in a partial nitrification sequencing batch biofilm reactor treating high strength ammonia wastewater and its greenhouse gas emission

Abstract: In present study, the feasibility of partial nitrification (PN) process achievement and its greenhouse gas emission were evaluated in a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). After 90days' operation, the average effluent NH-N removal efficiency and nitrite accumulation rate of PN-SBBR were high of 98.2% and 87.6%, respectively. Both polysaccharide and protein contents were reduced in loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) during the achievement of PN-biofilm.… Show more

“…This can avoid the high N2O emissions in suspended growth systems transitioning from anoxic to aerobic zones (Chandran et al 2011). Recent research on N2O emissions from MBBRs are consistent with the factors described at the beginning of this section, depending on the application (Mannina et al 2018a;Mannina et al 2017;Mannina et al 2018b;Wei et al 2017).…”

“…The reason might 168 be based on the fact that ammonium was converted to nitrite, which led to the increase 169 of hydrogen ion concentration. After that, the increase in pH values might be due to 170 the completion of nitrification and the stripping of carbon dioxide(Peng and Zhu, 171 2006;Wei et al, 2017). 1723.2.…”

“…Zuniga and Martinez reported an efficient phosphate removal and complete nitrification using SBBR . According to Wei et al, partial nitrification was successfully achieved and maintained in an SBBR . Although fixed‐bed reactors have been shown to be capable of treating a variety of wastewaters, the real‐world applications of SBBRs are limited due to several drawbacks of the system itself.…”

For example, the fixed bed is easily clogged.…”
