“…Recently, our cardiologists began performing novel patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure techniques such as NobleStitch™ EL PFO closure technique (Heartstitch®, Fountain Valley, CA). 2 Initially cardiologists performed these procedures with only fluoroscopy and ICE, but despite expectations, rapidly identified the superior visualization and procedural ease provided with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional TEE, and transitioned to general anesthesia with TEE guidance. Concurrent procedural tasks and ICE guidance certainly increase cognitive load for the interventional cardiologist, and as structural interventions become more complex, there may be a greater need for a separate physician responsible for imaging.…”
