Nomenclatural changes in Coleus and Plectranthus (Lamiaceae): a tale of more than two genera

Abstract: A synopsis of the genera Coleus Lour, Equilabium A.J.Paton, Mwany. & Culham and Plectranthus L’Hér. (Lamiaceae, Tribe Ocimeae, Subtribe Plecranthinae) is presented. Generic delimitation follows a recently published molecular phylogeny which identified Coleus as the sister of the remaining genera of Subtribe Plectranthinae; Plectranthus as sister to Tetradenia Benth. and Thorncroftia N.E.Br., and a separate phylogenetically distinct genus Equilabium comprising species previously placed in Plectranthus. … Show more

“…Ocimeae are characterized by declinate stamens lying along the anterior lip of the corolla and synthecous anthers [ 1 , 102 ]. As currently circumscribed, a total of 43 genera and over 1200 species are included in Ocimeae, distributed mainly in the tropics and subtropics [ 1 , 103 , 104 ]. Major centers of diversity include tropical Africa and Madagascar, China and Malaysia, and South America [ 1 , 103 ].…”

“…Building on observations by Kluge and Ting (1978), who reported nocturnal acidification in Plectranthus prostratus Gürke (now Coleus prostratus (Gürke) A.J. Paton et al 2019), Herppich and collaborators studied the occurrence of CAM in several species of what was then considered Plectranthus native to Yemen and southern Africa (Herppich 1996(Herppich , 1997Herppich and Herppich 1996;Herppich et al 1998). Features of CAM were noted in four of seven species.…”

“…Spreng. ; Paton et al 2019) is one of the most widely recognised members of the genus Coleus. It is a semi-succulent perennial herb native to southern and eastern Africa that is widely cultivated and naturalised elsewhere in the tropics and subtropics.…”

“…Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides) is a common ornamental bedding plant that is bred for its brilliant and diverse foliar color patterning (Bailey, 1924;Pedley & Pedley, 1974;Paton et al, 2018Paton et al, , 2019. Wild relatives in the Coleus genus harbor a small degree of variegated pigmentation that has been expanded into distinctive new cultivars that harbor complex variegation patterns through successive rounds of hybridization and selection (Suddee et al, 2004).…”
