Non‐Chiral Smectic Liquid Crystals: Synthesis of Non‐Chiral Smectic Liquid Crystals

Abstract: The synthesis of nonchiral smectic liquid crystals is a broad topic for discussion, however, it can be divided into subsections in two different ways. For example, smectic systems can be split into metallomesogens and nonmetallomesogens, alternatively, they can be divided into materials for (1) mesophase structure elucidation and classification [I], (2) property-structure correlations [2]; and ( 3 ) host systems for ferroelectric and antiferroelectric mixtures. In the following sections template structures use… Show more

“…similar to those discussed for DB9NO 2 . Consider the molecular structure of N,N′ ‐terephthalylidene‐bis(4‐ n ‐butylaniline) (TBBA), which is shown in Figure 16 51. TBBA is selected for discussion because it has a symmetrical molecular structure, and it exhibits nematic and smectic A and smectic C phases, where the smectic A phase has its molecules orthogonal to the planes of the layers whereas in the smectic C phase they are tilted…”
