Extraction of vanadium and nickel from diluted oil sands bitumen was investigated. The extraction was performed using HCl acidified ionic liquids, aqueous NaCl diluted ionic liquids, and water diluted ionic liquids to evaluate the relative contributions of acidity, dilution, and ionic strength on the extraction efficiency of ionic liquids. Experiments were conducted with 1-methylimidazolium chloride ([HMIM]-Cl), 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([EMIM]-Cl), 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride ([BMIM]-Cl), and 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium diethyl phosphate ([EMIM]-DEP). Acid concentration was varied over the range 0.1–10 M, and dilution was varied over the range 2–30 wt %. The study included an evaluation of the change in viscosity on dilution, and it was found that heavy oil viscosity mixing rules could adequately describe the change in viscosity on dilution. The combined effect of the dissociation equilibria and partitioning of the resulting metal containing species between the phases provided a plausible explanation to unify all of the observations in this work. It could explain the differences between vanadium and nickel extraction, as well as the differences in extraction behavior of the ionic liquid mixtures. Acidification of the ionic liquids influenced the dissociation equilibria of the metal ions (VO2+ or Ni2+) and the organic bases, e.g., porphyrins. The anionic species in the ionic liquid (Cl– or [PO4(C2H5)2]−) affected the extent of metal ion exchange and its partitioning between the oil and ionic liquid phases. Nickel was efficiently extracted as the chloride salt. Diethylphosphate was a better counterion to facilitate vanadium extraction.

Nowadays, a considerable number of various separation/preconcentration procedures coupled with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) can be found in the published literature. Among separation techniques, cloud point extraction (CPE) has found its regular use in ultratrace analysis of elements. This review offers a more detailed look to the coupling of CPE and ETAAS, especially to the parameters affecting ETAAS quantification of a selected element. Publications, where this combination of separation technique and quantification method is used, describe an achievement of quantitative extraction recoveries, an acceptable precision and low limits of quantification (LOQs) for different (ultra)trace elements in various complex matrices. These results lead to the conclusion that the developed procedures have a great analytical potential for reliable quantification of (ultra)trace elements, even when complicated matrices containing various components are to be analyzed, which is supported by papers mentioned in this review.

Electrothermal or graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS or GFAAS) is one of the most widely used techniques for determining elements in different matrices (e.g., foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, biological specimens, nanomaterials, polymers, fuels and environmental media). Numerous elements can be simply and quickly determined with high precision and accuracy, low detection limits, and at moderate cost. The technique is also suitable for direct solid and slurry sample analysis. A crucial feature of this technique is that it can perform simultaneous or sequential multi-element analysis. Over the years, many instruments have come on the market for multi-elemental analysis using mostly line source (LS) GFAAS and high-resolution continuum source (HR-CS) GFAAS. This review covers publications from 2000 to 2020related to the simultaneous or sequential multi-elemental analysis by LS-GFAAS and HR-CS-GFAAS. Mainly the applications, the limits of detection, the use of internal standardization and other aspects regarding the matrix, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures and modifiers are discussed. Finally, a critical comparison is made between the LS-GFAAS and HR-CS-GFAAS techniques.
