Non-Contact Sensor for Long-Term Continuous Vital Signs Monitoring: A Review on Intelligent Phased-Array Doppler Sensor Design

Abstract: It has been the dream of many scientists and engineers to realize a non-contact remote sensing system that can perform continuous, accurate and long-term monitoring of human vital signs as we have seen in many Sci-Fi movies. Having an intelligible sensor system that can measure and record key vital signs (such as heart rates and respiration rates) remotely and continuously without touching the patients, for example, can be an invaluable tool for physicians who need to make rapid life-and-death decisions. Such … Show more

“…There have also been numerous reviews, comparison studies [16][17][18][19], and smart systems designs [20,21] regarding unobtrusive [22], nonintrusive [23], and non-contact physiological vital signs monitoring for sleep monitoring. However, a comprehensive review of the non-contact Doppler radar for health monitoring for OSA diagnosis has been limited.…”

“…Each of these techniques, however, requires different process monitoring and has benefits and drawbacks that may make it more or less appealing to use under different circumstances as discussed in reference [51]. More details about the relevant techniques can be found in references [52,53]. Among the promising techniques for monitoring breathing activity, an ultrasonic radar detection method offers an accuracy, remote sensing and cheap in price.…”
