Non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis

Abstract: Bronchiectasis is characterized by irreversible widening of the medium-sized airways, with inflammation, chronic bacterial infection and destruction of the bronchial walls. Exercise or inspiratory muscle training may improve quality of life and exercise endurance in people with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Prolonged-use antibiotics improve clinical response rates, but may not reduce exacerbation rates or lung function. Surgery is often considered for people with extreme damage to one or two lobes of the… Show more

“…Symptoms include chronic productive cough, wheeze, dyspnoea and repeated respiratory infections 10 .Indeed, this disease should be suspected in any non-smoking patient who presented with all of these symptoms 7 . A number of patients had complained of pleuritic chest painwhich may reflect the presence of distended peripheral airways or distal pneumonitis adjacent to a visceral pleural surface 11 .In contrast with other studies, none of our patients have the rhinosinusitis symptoms. There is possibility that these symptoms were overlooked by the patients as part of the flu symptoms which were considered not related with their other respiratory symptoms.…”

“…[1] The etiology of noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis is mostly associated with pulmonary infection (viral, bacterial, Mycobacterial, or fungal) and chronic inflammation of bronchi, although other factors such as malnutrition and extremes of age are also contributory to its occurrence. [6,7] Until now, the causes and mechanisms of bronchiectasis in COPD are not clear. Understanding of the risk factors for bronchiectasis in COPD should provide insights for further investigation to the pathogenesis of this important comorbidity.…”

“…ronchiectasis is primarily a disease of the bronchi and bronchioles and has the potential to cause devastating illness by predisposing susceptible individuals to recurrent respiratory infections (1)(2)(3). Whereas the lower respiratory tract is normally sterile, conditions such as bronchiectasis and chronic lung illnesses enable colonization, which contributes to lung inflammation and injury.…”
