Non-nearest neighbour ICD in clusters

Abstract: Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) is an electronic decay process of excited, ionized systems. It has been shown to occur in a multitude of small and large systems. The effects of more than one possible decay partner are discussed in detail illustrated by simulated ICD electron spectra of NeAr clusters and pure Ne clusters. Hereby, the mostly underestimated contribution of decay with non-nearest neighbours is highlighted. In the neon clusters, the lifetime of the bulk atoms is found to be in excellent agreement… Show more

“…At the same time, a larger initial internuclear distance, i.e. ICD between non-nearest neighbors (second-shell ICD) [47], cannot explain the low fragment energies observed in the present experiment as such IC-decays would result in ICD electrons with much higher kinetic energy.…”

“…There, an energetic billiard-like collision takes place in which the He + ion transfers its KE to the He atom and thus stops moving if the collision is central (V). Subsequently, Coulomb explosion of the two He + ICD ions restarts from a larger distance as if ICD occured between non-nearest neighbors [25], giving rise to a lower final KE. This model is supported by a classical trajectory simulation for a linear configuration of atoms He-He + -He + -He.…”

“…Interparticle Coulombic Decay (ICD) [1,2] is an electronic decay process of ionized systems consisting of at least two weakly bonded units, be it atoms, molecules or clusters. ICD has been observed in multiple systems like noble gas clusters [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] and clusters of different solvent molecules like water [4,5,12] or ammonia [13][14][15][16]. It allowed to explain the repair mechanism of the enzyme photolyase [17] and was used to establish a more efficient double ionization strategy [18].…”
