Nondestructive FT-IR Sampling Technique to Study Glass Fiber Composite Interfaces

Abstract: A nondestructive FT-IR sampling technique was developed to study glass fiber composites. Two coupling agents, γ-APS (γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) and γ-MPS (γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) were used to test the validity of the technique. The spectra obtained were compared with those obtained using the KBr pellet and diffuse reflectance techniques. The new technique was sensitive to changes in the coupling agent structure induced by heating, changing the drying environment, and pH. This technique could b… Show more

“…For the APS-SnO 2 POW sample, three absorptions were observed at 938 (Si O Sn) [14], 1127 (Si O Si) [15], and 1488 cm −1 (NH 3 + ) [16], all of which were not observed for the SnO 2 POW sample. The DHBA-APS-SnO 2 POW sample showed no absorption due to NH 3 + , while other two absorptions were remained.…”

“…The reaction products of silica powders with APS have been widely studied by infrared spectroscopy (6)(7)(8). The infrared spectrum measured in the region from 1800 to 1300 cm -1 shows a strong NH2 deformation mode at 1600 cm -1 with weak absorptions at 1545 and 1473 cm -1, probably corresponding to the asymmetric and symmetric deformation modes of an NH~ group.…”

“…Nevertheless, all three notations are in use (3)(4)(5). Previous work concerning the binding of silanes to substrates has been performed mainly by vibrational spectroscopy (6)(7)(8). One of the problems often encountered with this method concerns the difficulty in the identification of different OH and SiO bonds.…”

“…Infrared spectroscopic methods have been used to investigate the variation at the interface between functionalized silica or glass fiber surfaces and reactive compounds. Different techniques were applied: transmission on thin films or pellets [5][6][7] (KBr, NaCl), diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy 6,7) (DRIFT), reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy 8,9) (RAIR) or the attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy [10][11][12][13] . Different methods for modifying silicon substrates and glass fibers to get amino-functionalized surfaces are described as well 1,2,5,6,8,14,15) .…”
