Noninvasive Bioimpedance Methods From the Viewpoint of Remote Monitoring in Heart Failure

Abstract: Heart failure (HF) is a major clinical, social, and economic problem. In view of the important role of fluid overload in the pathogenesis of HF exacerbation, early detection of fluid retention is of key importance in preventing emergency admissions for this reason. However, tools for monitoring volume status that could be widely used in the home setting are still missing. The physical properties of human tissues allow for the use of impedance-based noninvasive methods, whose different modifications are studied… Show more

“…Impedance fluctuations occurring as a result of changes in the volume and velocity of the blood vessels, air in the lungs, as well as movements of organs and changes in their shape can provide information about the state and function of the body’s internal organs [ 4 , 56 , 57 , 58 ]. The undoubted advantage of the bioimpedance method is its non-invasiveness and lack of known side effects [ 59 ]. During the tests, electrical impedance measurements are made of the tested tissue area.…”

“…The experimental data used in this study were sourced from the AMULET research project [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], under which a multicenter, prospective, randomized, open-label and controlled, parallel group trial was conducted (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03476590) at nine locations throughout Poland. In total, 605 patients with heart failure were recruited.…”

“…In doing so, it can give a reliable and objective measure of volume status [ 72 ]. Outside of nephrology, BI has been studied in the community, where impedance across the chest has been shown to correlate with pulmonary oedema and the decompensation of heart failure, with both vests and wearable patches trialled [ 73 , 74 ]. Bioimpedance analysis would also incorporate an added benefit of estimating the lean body mass, which could aid in nutritional assessments.…”
