The risks, financial costs and lengthy downtime associated with surgical procedures for fat reduction have led to the development of a number of non-invasive techniques. Non-invasive body contouring now represents the fastest growing area of aesthetic medicine. There are currently four leading non-invasive techniques for reducing localized subcutaneous adipose tissue: low-level laser therapy (LLLT), cryolipolysis, radio frequency (RF) and high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). To review and compare leading techniques and clinical outcomes of non-invasive subcutaneous fat reduction. The terms 'non-invasive', 'low-level laser', 'cryolipolysis', 'ultrasound' and 'radio frequency' were combined with 'lipolysis', 'fat reduction' or 'body contour' during separate searches in the PubMed database. We identified 31 studies (27 prospective clinical studies and four retrospective chart reviews) with a total of 2937 patients that had been treated with LLLT (n = 1114), cryolipolysis (n = 706), HIFU (n = 843) or RF (n = 116) or other techniques (n = 158) for fat reduction or body contouring. A majority of these patients experienced significant and satisfying results without any serious adverse effects. The studies investigating these devices have all varied in treatment regimen, body locations, follow-up times or outcome operationalization. Each technique differs in offered advantages and severity of adverse effects. However, multiple non-invasive devices are safe and effective for circumferential reduction in local fat tissue by 2 cm or more across the abdomen, hips and thighs. Results are consistent and reproducible for each device and none are associated with any serious or permanent adverse effects.

The search for satisfaction of aesthetic beauty and physical well-being is a concern present in today's society, and this has contributed to the increasing number of customers who seek the aesthetic treatments to minimize physical imperfections. Localized lipodystrophy has been one of the biggest reasons for this demand, including that the increased demand for the solution of this pathology has been increasingly the preference for methods that do not restrict daily routine. The modeler massage, ultrasound, radio frequency, vacuum therapy, electrolipophoresis, and cryolipolysis are one of the main non-invasive techniques available on the aesthetic market for the treatment of localized lipodystrophy, the latest being the cryolipolysis, with an increasing number of fans because of results highly efficient with fewer sessions. Therefore, this study aimed to address the concept and key features of localized lipodystrophy and present these major noninvasive treatments for the disorder. For this a literature search was carried out, indicating the scientific evidence of their use. The results were significant and satisfactory, showing the effectiveness of these treatments. It was therefore concluded that the non-invasive techniques presented are effective in reducing body measurements in the treatment of localized lipodystrophy, when properly applied from scientifically proven protocols.Keywords: aesthetic features; localized lipodystrophy; cryolipolysis. RESUMOA busca pela satisfação da beleza estética e bem estar físico é uma preocupação presente na sociedade, e isso tem contribuído para o aumento crescente do número de clientes que procuram os tratamentos estéticos para minimizar as imperfeições corporais. A lipodistrofia localizada tem sido um dos maiores motivos dessa procura, e a solução dessa patologia tem sido cada vez mais a preferência por métodos que não limitem a rotina diária. Massagem modeladora, ultrassom, radiofrequência, vacuoterapia, eletrolipoforese e criolipólise são algumas das principais técnicas não invasivas disponíveis no mercado estético para o tratamento da lipodistrofia localizada, sendo a mais recente, a criolipó-lise, com um número cada vez maior de adeptos devido resultado altamente eficiente com menor número de sessões. Diante disso, o presente trabalho teve por objetivo abordar o conceito e as principais características da lipodistrofia localizada e apresentar esses principais tratamentos não invasivos para a disfunção. Para isso foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica, apontando as evidências científicas da utilização desses recursos. Os resultados encontrados foram significativos e satisfatórios, apontando a eficácia desses tratamentos. Concluiu-se então que as técnicas não invasivas apresentadas são eficazes na redução de medidas corporais e no tratamento da lipodistrofia localizada, quando aplicadas corretamente a partir de protocolos cientificamente comprovados.

Background: There is increasing demand for noninvasive body contouring but objective data is difficult to compare between modalities. Currently, the most accepted forms of noninvasive body contouring are cryolipolyisis (Cryo), focused ultrasound (FUS), radiofrequency (RF), and low level laser therapy (LLLT). AbbreviationsObjective: To summarize the objective data on noninvasive body contouring. Methods:In October 2016, a pubmed search was performed with terms "noninvasive body contouring" or "non-invasive body contouring." The search was limited to human studies in English on the four major modalities.Results: 55 articles yielded data from 3649 patients. The most well studied modality was Cryo and the least was RF. Decreased abdominal/flank localized adiposity was most the most common endpoint reported. Both the minimum and maximum reported decreases in abdominal girth were from studies using RF (1.4cm and 7.4cm, respectively). Side effects were most common and significant with Cryo and absent with LLLT. Conclusions:Noninvasive body contouring has a significant amount of objective data available in the literature to date. Reductions of localized adiposity are clinically and statistically significant but modest.
