Nonlinear Complex-Resistivity Survey for DNAPL at the Savannah River Site A-014 Outfall

Abstract: Nonlinear complex-resistivity (NLCR) cross-hole imaging of the vadose zone was performed at the A-014 Outfall at the Savannah River Site, Aiken, SC. The purpose of this experiment was to fieldtest the ability of this method to detect dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), specifically tetrachloroethene (PCE), known to contaminate the area. Five vertical electrode arrays (VEAs) were installed with~15-ft (3 m) separations in and around the suspected source zone to depths of 72 ft (22 m), and measurements were … Show more

“…In the field, one can expect a sensitivity of 0.1 mrad with true 24 bit systems with timing of 60 ps at 1 kHz (G. Olhoeft, personal communication, 2010). For very extreme and unfavorable conditions, Grimm et al [2005] had a sensitivity of 0.8 mrad.…”

“…Recently, the SIP method has been the focus of a high number of research works in environmental geophysics for two main reasons: (1) induced polarization spectra bear information that can be useful to determine the hydraulic conductivity of rocks [ Arulanandan , 1969; Börner and Schön , 1991; Weller and Börner , 1996; Slater and Lesmes , 2002; Scott and Barker , 2003; Kemna et al , 2004; Hördt et al , 2007; Ghorbani et al , 2007; Slater , 2007; Tarasov and Titov , 2007] and (2) induced polarization is sensitive to the sorption of organic and inorganic contaminants and can be therefore used to delineate contaminant plumes [ Börner et al , 1993; Grimm et al , 2005; Sogade et al , 2006; Radic , 2007].…”

“…LaBrecque and Daily (2008) present a comprehensive analysis of the performance of several electrode materials and indicate that stainless steel performs reasonably well. Alternatively, Grimm et al (2005) chose to use titanium electrodes due to titanium’s resistance to weathering and to polarization. However, titanium’s cost could be prohibitive to its use in low‐cost systems, and therefore it was not chosen.…”
