Nonlinear drought plasticity reveals intraspecific diversity in a dominant grass species

Abstract: Intraspecific diversity of dominant species in native plant communities can modulate ecosystem function under both optimal and stressful conditions. Yet, few genotype by environment interaction studies quantify differences in the shape of plasticity functions or phenotypic breakpoints across genotypes in natural populations. Using three genotypes with a history of drought selection, we performed a greenhouse study on the dominant tallgrass prairie species Andropogon gerardii. We investigated phenotypic plastic… Show more

“…1 ) were responsible for shaping functional traits of local populations, allowing for site-specific leaf-level anatomy and physiology (Figs. 2 , 3 ; Tables 1 , S1, S2) (Hoffman and Smith 2020 ; Bachle and Nippert 2021 ). The drought conditions during 2018 at both Kansas locations resulted in significantly reduced photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, and leaf nitrogen content (Fig.…”

“…Maintaining high levels of plant species diversity is widely known to enhance ecosystem stability and resilience and provides a greater range of ecological functions. However, in plant communities with one or a few dominant species, intraspecific diversity is important for such ecosystem Land 2023, 12, 1195 2 of 21 characteristics [5]. Under certain urban scenarios, exotic species may more readily provide ecosystem services and health benefits than native species [6].…”
