Nonlinear Static Seismic Analysis and Its Application to Shallow Founded Buildings with Soil-Structure Interaction

Abstract: This paper presents new research in the field of nonlinear static seismic analysis and the N2 method for soil-structure systems. The rationale for this study stems from the inclusion of soil-structure systems in simplified displacement-based design methods. The conducted research comprises three parts, including original experimental investigations, the development of numerical models and the validation of results. A new methodology is presented that provides a step-by-step procedure for the implementation of … Show more

“…Work [19] considers an integrated approach to seismic effects on steel moment frames, taking into account soil-structure interaction. It is emphasized that soil-base subsidence and structural failure are the most important factors in the analysis of dynamic effects on buildings and structures.…”

“…In order to understand the seismic behavior of structures and thus prevent or at least mitigate fatal consequences, many studies and seismic analyses of the built environment have been carried out [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In recent decades, extensive research and significant advances have been made in modeling, analysis, design, and behavior assessment at the individual structure level as well as on the macro-urban [3,6,8], regional [5,9], and even world scales [2].…”

“…These methods allow for the incorporation of soil-structure interaction in the design, estimation of the inelastic response, and seismic performance assessment. Much of the current literature on soil-structure interaction pays particular attention to the effects of the soil-structure interaction when shallow foundations or piles are employed for the foundations [17] and its negative effect on the structural building response [18]. Other approaches have been focused on the soil, assessing the influence of the sandy soils in the soil-structure interaction [19] to explain that sandy soils amplify seismic waves on the soil-structure interface because of the soil-structure interaction effect.…”
