Normative data on penile and anogenital measurements of term male infants in Sagamu, Nigeria

Abstract: Aim: To document normative data on penile size and anogenital distances of apparently normal term male infants in Sagamu, Nigeria. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 303 term male infants within the first 72 hours of life. Stretched penile length, penile width and three measures of anogenital distances were recorded: anogenital distance-1, anogenital distance-2 and anoscrotal distance. Results: The mean (AESD) stretched penile length and penile width were 39.4 AE 4.2 mm and 11.0 AE 1.0 mm, re… Show more

“…Similarly, the AFD was higher than previously reported [8, 10, 23, 24]. The same observation was reported in male newborns in the same location [25]. Although these various observations suggest that newborn clitoral length and anogenital distances may differ according to ethnicity, they may also reflect differences in the methodology.…”

“…This was a cross sectional, multi-centre study conducted in Sagamu, South-west Nigeria between April 2014 and March 2015. By convenience sampling, two hundred term male infants of consecutive births were selected from a cohort of newborns who were recruited from a teaching hospital, two specialist private hospitals and two primary health centres, to establish normative data for stretched penile length for the locale (7). A sample size of 200 has been documented to be adequate for the estimation of reference range as it provides a stable reference range between the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles with a 99% confidence level (15,16).…”
