Normativity in joint action

Abstract: The debate regarding the nature of joint action has come to a stalemate due to a dependence on intuitional methods. Normativists, such as Margaret Gilbert, argue that action‐relative normative relations are inherent in joint action, while non‐normativists, such as Michael Bratman, claim that there are minimal cases of joint action without normative relations. In this work, we describe the first experimental examinations of these intuitions, and report the results of six studies that weigh in favor of the norma… Show more

“…Given the distributions of our data, alongside our use of ordinal measures, we therefore will report the results of non-parametric tests throughout this paper. Consult Diaz et al (2017) and Gomez-Lavin and Rachar’s (2019) recent work in experimental philosophy which both serve to highlight the use of non-parametric methods for similar vignette styled experiments.…”

“…This paradigm is developed primarily inGomez-Lavin & Rachar (2019) and Gomez-Lavin & Rachar (forthcoming). It is descriptive in the sense that it aims to understand the obligations people take themselves to have in certain contexts, rather than provide any justification for those judgments.7 (2013, p. 102).…”

“…Such regulative actions are manifested during joint action (Gilbert 2009;Roth 2004). Some recent studies suggest that people who judge that two persons are walking together in certain conditions are more likely to consider that one of the participants has the right to rebuke the other when he peels off (Gomez-Lavin & Rachar, 2019).…”
