North Atlantic Oscillation Dynamics Recorded in Greenland Ice Cores

Abstract: Carefully selected ice core data from Greenland can be used to reconstruct an annual proxy North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) index. This index for the past 350 years indicates that the NAO is an intermittent climate oscillation with temporally active (coherent) and passive (incoherent) phases. No indication for a single, persistent, multiannual NAO frequency is found. In active phases, most of the energy is located in the frequency band with periods less than about 15 years. In addition, variability on time sca… Show more

“…In particular, the influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on the snow accumulation on the GrIS was used to reconstruct a NAO-index (NAOI) beyond the instrumental period [Appenzeller et al, 1998a[Appenzeller et al, , 1998b. The accumulation rates from the NASAU ice core (73.84°N, 49.49°W) in NorthWestern Greenland, for instance, revealed a significant correlation (r = À0.57) with the instrumental NAOI.…”

“…Different approaches to a NAOI reconstruction have been established (Cook et al 1998Appenzeller et al 1998;Luterbacher et al 1999;LUT;Garcia et al 2000;Cullen et al 2000;Proctor et al 2000;Glueck and Stockton 2001;Rodrigo et al 2001;Vinther et al 2003). However, Schmutz et al (2000) raised some doubts about the reliability of many of the reconstructions that were based on natural proxies.…”

“…Les études sur l'ONA (Appenzeller, 1998) tendent à montrer que lors des phases actives, les périodicités sont dans les hautes fréquences (5-15 ans) alors qu'en phase passive c'est uniquement la basse fréquence qui apparaît (40-50 ans). La périodicité de 7-8 ans (ici 7,3 ans) en particulier a fait l'objet d'une attention toute particulière des météorologistes quant à ses liens avec l'ONA (Da Costa et al, 2002 ;Simonnet, sous presse).…”
