Four distinctive periods (epochs) of spring rainfall over southern China have been identified: 1901–1937, 1938–1958, 1959–1994 and 1995–2010. During the first and third epochs, the centre of the inter‐annual variation of spring rainfall is located in the South China (SC) region, mainly influenced by low‐latitude climate forcing. During the second and fourth epochs, the centre is located in the mid‐lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLRYR) region, mainly attributed to mid‐ and high‐latitude forcing.
