Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based nanocomposites were prepared by a two-step process. Firstly, titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated MWCNT was prepared via sol-gel technique. In the second step, the acid modified MWCNTs were dispersed in the thermoplastic polyurethane matrix by solution blending process. Characterizations of the nanocomposites were done by X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Microwave absorption studies of the nanocomposites were carried out in X-band region. The microwave absorption result was discussed with the help of complex permittivity and permeability of the prepared radar absorbing material (RAM). The result showed superior microwave absorption property of the composite containing both TiO2 coated MWCNT and magnetite (Fe3O4). This result is due to the effective absorption of both electrical and magnetic components of the microwave. RAM-MW, RAM-Ti, RAM-Ti@MW and RAMTi@ MW/Fe and showed the maximum reflection loss of –16.03 dB at 10.99 GHz, –8.4 dB at 12.4 GHz, –36.44 dB at 12.05 GHz and –42.53 dB at 10.98 GHz respectively. Incorporation of MWCNT enhanced the thermal stability of the composite which has been confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis

Poly(lactic acid)/poly(ɛ‐caprolactone)/carbon nanotube (PLA/PCL/CNT) nanocomposites (NCs) were melt‐processed in a conventional industrial‐like twin‐screw extruder maintaining a constant PLA/PCL 80/20 wt. ratio. CNTs located in the thermodynamically favored PCL phase and, as a result, the “sea–island” morphology of the unfilled blend was replaced by a more continuous PCL dispersed phase in the ternary NCs. Rheological and electrical percolation took place at the same CNT contents (over 1.2 wt %) that TEM images suggest continuity of the PCL phase. The electrical and the low‐strain mechanical behaviors upon CNT addition were similar in the reference binary PLA/CNT and ternary PLA/PCL/CNT NCs. In the percolated NCs, the conductivity became 106–107 times higher than in the insulating compositions, while the Young modulus increased linearly upon the addition of CNT (12% increase at 4.9 wt % loading). Moreover, all the PLA/PCL/CNT NCs showed a ductile behavior (elongation at break >130%) similar to that of the unfilled PLA/PCL blend (140%), in contrast to the brittle behavior of binary PLA/CNT NCs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article critically reviews the detailed fundamental understanding of the influence of conductive nanoparticle migration on the localization, and hence, electrical conductivity of immiscible polymer blend nanocomposites. Three types of conductive nanoparticles, namely, spherical, tubular, and platelet, are discussed with respect to their migration and electrical conductivity of obtained nanocomposites. A complete migration process consists of bulk migration within one component, contact with the interface, and penetration to the other component. During processing, the wetting coefficient parameter is the main thermodynamically controlling factor for nanoparticle localization. However, kinetic effects, such as mixing sequence and intensity, viscosity ratio, size and shape of the nanoparticles, and mixing time, can play a substantial role in determining the final locations of nanoparticles. Moreover, the rate of migration varies with the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles. It has been reported that nanoparticles in a more viscous phase move slower compared with a low viscous phase. Furthermore, nanoparticles having high aspect ratios and surface polarities compatible with the other component migrating faster. It is established that immiscible polymer blend nanocomposites with a “double percolation” structure having higher conductivity with nanoparticles are localized at the interface of the co‐continuous blends.
