Novel Continuous Fiber Bi-Matrix Composite 3-D Printing Technology

Abstract: A new paradigm in continuous fiber-reinforced polymer fused filament fabrication based on a thermoset-thermoplastic bi-matrix material system is proposed and proved. This totally new 3-D printing concept has the potential to overcome the drawbacks and to combine the advantages of separate thermoset and thermoplastic-based, fused filament fabrication methods and to advance continuous fiber-reinforced polymer 3-D printing toward higher mechanical performances of 3-D printed parts. The novel bi-matrix 3-D printin… Show more

“…For implants, the most common materials are metals, especially titanium alloys and for other applications, polymers such as polyamide, ABS, Nylon and different photocurable resins. Material extrusion of reinforced composites would be interesting material where light weight is required, such as for prostheses, and there are new developments in the material extrusion of metals which could work in many categories [ 122 , 123 , 124 , 125 ].…”

“…The future direction of the present research may include a comprehensive study of the blending of some of the commonly known reinforcing agents, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, with Nylon-6, since these substances possess an excellent potential in terms of mechanical resistance, biocompatibility, and various uses in sensors and conductive devices [47,48,49,50,51,52,53]. Blending these substances may lead to the generation of advanced materials to be employed for the additive manufacturing of strong, flexible, and durable structures for a variety of commercial uses [49,54], which need to be investigated via mechanical testing and the microstructure characterization conducted through optical and scanning electron microscope imaging.…”

“…The polymer matrix is generally identical to that of the towpreg. However, in the case of Anisoprint’s process, the co-extruded polymer matrix is a thermoplastic, whereas the towpreg matrix is a thermoset [ 107 , 108 , 109 ]. Further polymer matrices should be available soon, increasing the spectra of application of this method.…”
