Novel Coumarin‐based Fluorescent Probe for Selective Detection of Bisulfite Anion in Water

Abstract: Coumarins and its analogues have been widely used as chromophore in design of fluorescent probe, while less coumarin-based fluorescent probe was reported for detection of anion in water. In this article, coumarin-based fluorescent probes with salicylaldehyde functionality as recognition unit have been developed for selective detection of bisulfite anions in water. Four novel fluorescent probes were synthesized from 4-haloresorcinol in three steps. The chemoprobe exhibited selective response to bisulfite over o… Show more

“…SO 2 and its derivatives selectively add to aldehydes/ketones or to double bonds, leading to changes in the electron-withdrawing effects or the p-conjugated systems of the probes, which can cause a response in terms of the fluorescence signal. 79 Bisulfite could selectively attack the aldehyde moieties of the probes. The quantum yields of products of 72a-d were 0.33, 0.62, 0.52 and 0.26, respectively.…”

“…Consequently, ratiometric probes with NIR fluorescent changes are very attractive to sense and detect important molecules of interest. To date, several fluorescent probes for HSO 3 − /SO 3 2− have been developed based on different approaches such as complexation with amines [15], the selective deprotection of levulinate group [16][17][18][19], the selective reaction with aldehyde [20][21][22][23][24][25][26] and Michael-type additions [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35], however, many of them are intensity-based, in which factors such as instrumental efficiency, the probe concentration, and environmental conditions can interfere with signal output. In addition, almost all of these probes showed emissions only in the visible region, and some of them need to use ultraviolet excitation, which limited their biological applications.…”

“…Coumarin-based system 72 has been developed as a novel turn-on fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for fluoride anions (J. . Chen et al, 2010). Coumarin Schiff-base 77 is a highly selective and sensitive turn-on fluorogenic probe for detection of HSO 4 -ions in aqueous solution (H. J.…”
