Novel Diagnostic and Prognostic Tools for Lung Cancer Cachexia: Based on Nutritional and Inflammatory Status

Abstract: BackgroundCachexia is one of the most common complications affecting lung cancer patients that seriously affects their quality-of-life and survival time. This study aimed to analyze the predictors and prognostic factors of lung cancer cachexia as well as to develop a convenient and accurate clinical prediction tool for oncologists.MethodsIn this multicenter cohort study, 4022 patients with lung cancer were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were randomly categorized into training and verification sets (7:3… Show more

“…Participants were drawn from the Investigation on Nutrition Status and its Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers (INSCOC) project ( , registration number ChiCTR1800020329), which is an ongoing, multicenter, prospective cohort study. The study design, methods, and development were described previously ( 8 , 9 ). In short, all patients with a pathologically diagnosed malignancy were between 18 and 90 years of age at the time of admission.…”

“…All of these are known poor prognostic factors for UC; however, we focused on low Alb and high CRP levels. Low Alb (Cong et al 2022 ) (Liu et al 2021 ) (Liu et al 2022 ) and high CRP levels (Cong et al 2022 ) (Fearon et al 2006 ) (McMillan 2008 ) (Marsik et al 2008 ) (Hilmy et al 2005 ) are typical indicators of cachexia. In the present study, 32 patients (32%) met the criteria of low Alb (Alb < 3.3 g/dL) and high CRP (CRP > 1.9 mg/dL) levels, and approximately half of them experienced cancer-related death within 3 months of starting treatment, with 70% succumbing to cancer within 7 months (Fig.…”

“…Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess the robustness of the findings. These included excluding participants with a history of cancer (as tumor burden may significantly impact nutritional status and levels of inflammation, thereby affecting phenotypic age [13]), excluding participants older than 75 years, and including data from three examinations conducted between 2001 and 2006. The statistical analysis was conducted using R 4.2.0 software, and statistical significance was determined with a two-sided p-value of less than 0.05.…”
