SOFC solid electrolytes are known for their ionic conductivity characteristics, which increase with increasing SOFC operating temperature. Using COMSOL Multiphysics numerical simulation, analysis of SOFC power performance with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and lithium sodium carbonate – gadolinium-doped ceria ({LiNa}2CO3-GDC) electrolytes was conducted to determine the potential of these electrolytes in their application in SOFC. The ionic conductivity of YSZ was differentiated based on the mole value of the yttria content, namely 8, 8.95, 10 and 11.54 mol. Meanwhile, GDC varied based on the (LiNa)2CO3 content such as 7.8, 10, 16.8 and 30 %. With the numerical model, the calculation error is an average of 7.32 % and 6.89 % for the experimental power and voltage values. In SOFC with the YSZ electrolyte, it was found that the power output can increase 26.4–35 times with an increase in operating temperature from 500 °C to 750 °C. SOFC with 8YSZ can produce the highest power compared to other YSZ, which is 123 A/m2 at a current of 198 A/m2 with an operating temperature of 500 °C and 3,440 A/m2 at a current of 5,549 A/m2 with an operating temperature of 750 °C. Whereas in SOFC with the GDC electrolyte, it was found that the power output can increase 18.6–22.6 times with an increase in operating temperature from 500 °C to 750 °C. SOFC with 30 % (LiNa)2CO3-GDC produced the highest power compared to other GDC, which is 231 A/m2 at a current of 444 A/m2 with an operating temperature of 500 °C and 5,240 A/m2 at a current of 10,077 A/m2 with an operating temperature of 750 °C. YSZ also showed the potential for an increase in power output as the SOFC temperature increases above 750 °C, while the 30 % variation (LiNa)2CO3-GDC shows a limited increase in ionic conductivity at 750 °C

SUMMARY The design and the fabrication of novel stair‐step electrolyte based on yttria stabilized zirconia are presented. The novel electrolyte has gradually reduced oxide ion transport paths achieved by the stair‐step design. The mechanical and electrochemical performance of the novel electrolyte are investigated and compared to those of standard electrolyte support. Three‐point bending tests indicate that the fracture displacement and force measured for the novel electrolyte are 11% and 32% less than those of the standard electrolyte support, respectively. However, the cell based on the novel electrolyte exhibits 40% higher electrochemical performance than the standard electrolyte supported cell at an operation temperature of 700 °C. Impedance analyses revealed that the enhanced cell performance is mainly due to the decrease in the ohmic resistance of the cell achieved by the novel electrolyte design. In addition, the electrode resistances are found to be decreased due to the increased electrochemical reaction zones since the contact area between the novel electrolyte and both electrodes are increased by the novel electrolyte design. Moreover, the cell with novel electrolyte produced 0.47 Wcm−2 peak power at 750 °C while the standard electrolyte supported cell shows almost the same power output at around 800 °C. Thus, novel designed electrolyte also offers some amount of reduction in the operation temperature of solid oxide fuel cells. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the present study, CeO2 and Eu2O3 doped Bi2O3 composite materials for solid oxide fuel cells were investigated. (Bi2O3)1−x−y(CeO2)x(Eu2O3)y ternary systems (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.09, 0.11 and y = 0.11, 0.09, 0.07, 0.05, 0.03, 0.01 dopant concentrations) were fabricated at different temperatures (650, 700, 750, and 800 • C) using conventional solid-state synthesis techniques. Characterization of these electrolyte samples were carried out by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimeter, and the four-point probe technique measurements. X-ray powder diffraction measurements showed that nearly all the samples have α + β + γ phase except the samples with tetragonal β-phase sintered at 700, 750 • C and 750, 800 • C with the dopant ratios (x = 0.07, y = 0.05) and (x = 0.09, y = 0.03), respectively. Four-point probe technique measurements showed that the measured ionic conductivity of the stable samples vary in the range 1.05 × 10 −1-4.76 × 10 −1 S/cm. Additionally, the activation energy values of the samples were calculated with the help of the Arrhenius equation adapted to the logσ graphics versus 1000/T varying in the range 0.7799-0.8746 eV. This result shows that there is a good relationship between the activation energy values and conductivity values.
