Novel fermentation process strengthening strategy for production of propionic acid and vitamin B12 by Propionibacterium freudenreichii

Abstract: An efficient fermentation-strengthening approach was developed to improve the anaerobic production of propionic acid and vitamin B12 by co-fermentation with Propionibacterium freudenreichii. Vitamin B12 production from glucose resulted in relatively high productivity (0.35 mg/L h) but a low propionic acid yield (0.55 g/g). By contrast, glycerol gave a high propionic acid yield (0.63 g/g) but low productivity (0.16 g/L h). Co-fermentation of glycerol and glucose with a gradual addition strategy gave high yields… Show more

“…Vitamin B12 production by P. freudenreichii T82 could also be improved by using more suitable carbon sources. Wang et al ( 2014 ) were able to produce high yields of vitamin B12 (0.72 mg/g) and propionic acid (0.81 g/g) in P. freudenreichii subsp. shermanii using concurrent glucose and glycerol fermentation.…”

“…To optimize the fermentation performance, a strategy of gradually adding feedstock was employed, in which glycerol was introduced at set times (12,24,48, and 72 h) with a constant mass ratio of 2.5 to glucose. When glycerol was added after 48 h, the highest product concentration (propionic acid: 42.7 g*L -1 ), the highest yield (propionic acid: 0.71 g*g -1 ), and highest productivity (propionic acid: 0.36 g*L -1 *h -1 ) of this experiment were obtained [46]. …”

“…Propionibacterium freudenreichii could also achieve a high propionic acid yield of 0.71 g*g -1 [46]. In this report batch fermentations were studied in three parallel 200 mL expanded bed adsorption bioreactors (EBAB) connected with a recirculation loop to a 5 L stirred-tank fermenter to control the temperature and pH.…”
